The seven town councils of the island have agreed to suspend all their festivals until October 1st, as revealed by the mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort, on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero. Thus, neither Los Dolores, nor the San Ginés festivals or those of Carmen in La Villa, among many others, will be celebrated this year.

"We have to ensure that the measures that are logically being implemented by the health authorities are complied with because this is not over, we must not be confident, and we must focus all those economic efforts that were made for the festivals on items such as home help and social affairs," he said.

In this regard, in the case of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort has pointed out that the budget that was approved in November "no longer makes sense" and that, therefore, he has asked the Councilor for Economy and Finance, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, to prepare an amendment to it focused "on employment, social affairs and public works".

"I think the public understands"

"I think the public understands, that they understand that at this time we must replace the festivity with achieving the goals of aid actions for those who really need it," said the mayor of Teguise, who described the unemployment figures for the month of April, which grew by 25.5% on the island, as "bleeding".

Regarding the workers in the Festivals area, Betancort has indicated that they will be relocated to other departments, for example, "to help the people of home help".

"And sports activities that we had at an international level, windsurfing, Famara Total, all that is currently paralyzed, and that staff logically will have to start working on ordinances...", added the mayor of Teguise, a town council that is preparing a draft of measures for de-escalation, which will entail the restructuring of different departments of the Consistory.
