The National Police has increased the number of police officers in the commercial areas of the Canary Islands with a large influx of public, a device that will be maintained throughout the Christmas campaign within the framework of the intensification of the Safe Commerce Plan. This Plan is designed to provide protection to the commerce sector and its clients throughout the year and on certain dates, such as the Christmas season, it is reinforced to minimize the proliferation of criminal offenses that are committed during that period, against merchants and citizens who frequent commercial areas.

During the Christmas campaign, police work is intensified with specific operational devices in those places where crowds occur, especially in commercial and leisure areas, Christmas markets and entertainment areas.

Specific operational devices

The increase in agents, with special relevance of the uniformed police presence, will have an impact on citizen security with the implementation of specific plans in each place, coordinated by the respective provincial police stations.

The Plan also provides for the involvement of Citizen Participation delegations, whose main tasks include maintaining permanent contact with establishments and representative associations of the commercial sector and their potential clients to involve them in their own security. With this measure, merchants receive a face-to-face service and more effective attention.

Guides and brochures with advice

At the same time that the presence of agents is increased in the most commercial streets, during these days guides and brochures will be distributed, prepared by the National Police, with security advice aimed at associations and merchants.

These publications include the most important advice to take into account in all phases of commerce -acquisition, transport, distribution, sale, online commerce, means of payment- as well as information on modus operandi, action in the event of a crime or formulation of complaints.

Some of the security tips included in this informative material are the following:

  • Prioritize the use of electronic means of payment.
  • It is recommended to have counterfeit bill detectors.
  • Perform the processing of personal data in accordance with current legislation.
  • Pay attention to people who have a vigilant attitude.
  • If you decide to install any security measure in your establishment, always use professionals authorized by the National Police.
  • If you suffer or witness a criminal act, avoid manipulating any object.
  • If you observe the door of your premises forced or open, do not enter and call 091.

Commerce is a strategic sector of important economic significance, so for the National Police it is essential to defend safe commerce and guarantee economic security.
