Las Intoxicadas, Lady Golosinas, Los Desahuciados and Los Gorfines took the stage this Tuesday in the second phase of the XX Murgas Contest of the Arrecife Carnival. The four groups displayed their rhymes, rhythms and, above all, ironies on stage when interpreting the two themes that the jury will take into consideration to issue its verdict next Friday, February 12.
Without opening acts in this second phase, the murga Las Intoxicadas took the stage first, which has been participating in the Arrecife Carnival since 1996. With 39 women from the Valterra neighborhood, they offered two themes full of humor and carnival criticism, "We are going on a farewell party" and "From a fortunate island little, if anything", where they talked about the economic crisis that is being experienced on the Island, the situation of tourism, the tragedy of Los Cocoteros, which celebrates its first anniversary this Monday, February 15, and the difficulties of the disabled in a city like Arrecife. Las Intoxicadas wore the fantasy "With a drumbeat you will see my march", by the designer Toño Aparicio.
Politics, deficiencies and a lot of irony
Strictly complying with the time, half an hour later another female murga took the stage, Lady Golosinas, with her fantasy "A candy to play with", also by Toño Aparicio. These murgueras, directed by Margot Perera, and who have been acting and living the capital's Carnival since 2002, sang "A newspaper that nobody ever wanted to read" and "A crazy, crazy trip to tell", in which they dealt with issues such as mistreatment, health and the elderly, among others.
The third murga presented by the Radio Lanzarote announcer, Francisco José Navarro, in charge of the presentation of this carnival event, was Los Desahuciados who, after 13 years of Carnival, presented themselves in this twentieth edition with the fantasy "Alphabet clown", designed by themselves. The 51 members of this murga, after dedicating their performance to their mothers, girlfriends and wives, performed the songs "Three quarters more of the same" and "Today I speak, the one who puts up with your ignorance", where in addition to the usual political criticisms, they made mention of the subsidies of these murga groups and the Televisión Canaria.
Immigration and corruption
Finally, it was Los Gorfines' turn to take the stage, whose 33 murgueros wore the fantasy "This is burning up", by the designer Óscar Rodríguez. The two songs they performed were titled "I am unfair and false Europe", where they criticized the position of Europe, the Canary Islands Government and the Central Government with respect to the problem of immigration, and "Pil Pinela", in which they reviewed the issues of corruption on the island, with special emphasis on Arrecife.
The members of the jury once again took good note of everything that happened at the Fairgrounds, to issue their verdict on February 12 in the grand finale of the XX Murgas Contest of the Arrecife 2010 Carnival.
