Lorena Ureña, her two daughters and her partner, Javier Fernández, already have a place to sleep. This Thursday, at the latest, they had to leave the house they were in, but a day before they managed to get two friends to lend them money for a month's rent. This same Thursday, they are moving to a house in Arrecife. They don't know what will happen next month, but at least they are breathing a little easier now.
This family arrived on the island at the end of February, because a relative "promised them work", but in Lanzarote they found a very different situation. In addition, the relationship with this family ended very badly, since last Sunday they were "thrown out on the street", according to them. Luckily, they found a close relative who was able to take them in for a few days, but this Thursday they had to leave the house, since it was sold.
On Wednesday, a day before they were left homeless, two friends from the peninsula, from Madrid and the Basque Country, left them 380 euros for the rent of a house in Arrecife. "They have taken it from their rent, which they have to pay on the 10th. I have that margin to return the money to them, because they have done it with all the good will, but they are people who are not doing well economically," explains Lorena Ureña.
They found the apartment on Wednesday afternoon and managed to move there at night. The landlord has also allowed them to pay the deposit from next month and in installments.
Red Cross Help
This Thursday, Red Cross is helping them to move. "We don't have a vehicle or money to pay for a truck and the Red Cross is helping us to take things with a vehicle," says Ureña, grateful, since the NGO is also helping them to "make photocopies, use the Internet or make phone calls." In addition, Cáritas also gave them some bags of food.
Lorena Ureña hopes to get help from the Cabildo to pay a month's rent. "That way, I could return the money to my friends." She doesn't know what she will do next month, since in March she has only worked five days, so she will not earn "practically anything." She is on trial in a hotel for two months, but she fears not continuing in the position, so she asks for work for her and her partner.
