The Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium has recommended the suspension of all sports and extracurricular activities outdoors from noon this Friday, due to the strong intensity of the wind.

According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), Lanzarote is on orange alert level due to strong gusts of wind of up to 90 kilometers per hour, mainly in the Arrecife area. The forecasts indicate that the gusts of wind will subside on Friday night, although the island will continue on yellow alert on Saturday.

Given this situation, the Security and Emergency Consortium also recommends that the population take extreme precautions and remembers the necessary self-protection measures in anticipation of possible damage from adverse weather phenomena:

• Close doors and windows to avoid drafts that could lead to breakage and falling glass

• Remove pots and all objects that may fall to the street from balconies and roofs

• Check homes for cornices, balconies and facades in poor condition that may cause falling debris and rubble

• Avoid going on excursions until normality is restored

• Try to postpone road trips and, if you do, take extreme precautions. The use of public transport is recommended

• Motorcycles and large vehicles that offer a large contact surface with the wind (trucks, vans, vehicles with trailers or roulottes) run the risk of overturning in the face of transverse winds

• Avoid walking through gardens or wooded areas

• Stay away from walls, old houses, scaffolding, illuminated signs, billboards and other structures that may be knocked down by the wind

• Light poles and power towers are dangerous. Move away and in case of risk call 1-1-2

• In case of risk due to construction cranes, immediately notify 1-1-2

• Drive slowly and carefully due to the possible presence of obstacles on the road or gusts of wind that cause you to lose control of your vehicle, especially when overtaking

Likewise, the population is reminded that they can call the emergency numbers 112 or 080 in case of an incident.
