The president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés, and the Councilor of the House of Volcanoes-Geopark, Echedey Eugenio, recently received the professor of geology from the Complutense University of Madrid and director of the Institute of Geosciences (CSIC-Complutense University), Rosario Lunar, to thank her "personally" for the transfer of her private collection of minerals, rocks and mineralizations of strategic interest to Lanzarote. "This is an extensive and complete lithic collection that constitutes an element of incalculable value for the dissemination and divulgation of the world's geological heritage and an indispensable tool to deepen the knowledge in the world of geosciences," said San Ginés at the conclusion of the meeting.
Dr. Lunar wants this fund to be kept, preserved and managed in Lanzarote, "an endearing island, a Dorado that still holds many secrets for researchers dedicated to the science of the Earth", due to the close ties it maintains with the House of Volcanoes through the Geosciences Laboratory, an entity managed by the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the Institute of Geosciences (CSIC-Complutense University) that she directs.
The collection ceded to the island consists of around 1,000 hand samples cataloged, collected over more than 40 years of research and scientific campaigns carried out in different areas of the planet. The minerals of Rosario Lunar will be housed in the House of Volcanoes, where they will be classified and ordered according to the characteristics of each sample. For greater dissemination of this fund "of great scientific interest", it will be posted openly on the website of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the Geopark Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago.
For his part, Echedey Eugenio, thanked the professor for the transfer of this material, which he believes will become a "claim of notable interest for visiting the volcanological research and development center".
