The New Society of Hunters of Lanzarote paid tribute to the most veteran hunters in an event held at the Casa-Museo del Monumento al Campesino, on the night of this Saturday, November 5. The president of the New Society of Hunters, Antonio Félix Fernández, spoke at the event, making a heartfelt defense of hunting and praising the example that the honorees represent for this activity. Next, the head of the Cabildo's Hunting area, Andrés Stinga, spoke, who conveyed to those present “our interest in further strengthening the ties of cooperation with this group, so that hunting is a more orderly, more controlled and more sustainable activity, because it benefits everyone: the species, the hunters and the natural environment.” Andrés Stinga concluded his speech by requesting “to continue with our agenda to improve coordination between the Cabildo and hunting in fields such as animal welfare, censuses, respect by hunters for the environment and agriculture, or campaigns to sow forage for food.”
The mayor of San Bartolomé also spoke, Isidro Pérez, who recalled the unconditional support of the city council for hunting.
The last speech was given by the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, who referred to the veterans “who have distinguished themselves, above all, by the orderly use of hunting, as well as by transmitting their passion for hunting, but guaranteeing at all times the safety of people, respecting the rights of landowners and ensuring the protection of their assets and crops.”
The president stressed that, with the practice of this sport, “they carry out an essential task for environmental management through the control of wild species that cause damage to crops when they grow excessively, although I believe that we must advance towards an even more sustainable hunt than we have done so far on the island, in order to take advantage of hunting species as a renewable natural resource and so that neither the species nor the environment that supports them deteriorate.”
