A group of refugees from the war in Ukraine, including three adults and 16 minors, some of them from an orphanage, will arrive this Friday afternoon in Fuerteventura together with a group of volunteers who traveled to the Ukrainian border to receive them.

The group of refugees, among whom are minors between the ages of 18 months and 17 years, will arrive at the Fuerteventura airport on a flight from Budapest at 6:00 p.m., according to a statement from the La Oliva City Council.

The group of displaced persons will be received by the mayor of La Oliva, Pilar González, and Natalia Karpukhina, a Ukrainian woman residing in Fuerteventura.

After having managed to escape from areas subjected to heavy bombardment by the Russian army, they will arrive in Fuerteventura accompanied by a group of volunteers who shared with them a dangerous odyssey of more than nine days to cross the border to a safe place.

Following an initiative by the La Oliva City Council to organize a collection of material destined for humanitarian aid to the inhabitants of Ukraine, it was decided to contact the residents of that country in the municipality.

After a meeting with the mayor, Natalia Karpukhina requested municipal collaboration to be able to welcome children from an orphanage in her country.

From that moment on, all possible efforts were initiated, even establishing contact by the City Council with the Spanish embassies of the border countries and work was done to enable a municipal space to cover the needs that arose.
