"There are no large demonstrations because "the repression would be brutal", but there are "some gestures of support for Aminatu Haidar", says Hassan Durhi, from the Sahrawi Association of Serious Human Rights Violations (Asvh).
Western Sahara "is beginning to mobilize in solidarity" with the Sahrawi activist who was expelled nine days ago by Morocco from El Aaiún, the capital of the former Spanish colony, to the airport of Lanzarote.
According to Durhi, all the Sahrawi militants who "resist" in Western Sahara will begin a 24-hour hunger strike at midnight this Monday to show "that we are with Haidar" and to "demand her return home." A strike that will also be joined by "Sahrawi university students residing in Moroccan cities."
It will not be the first hunger strike in recent days. "A group of 300 women from El Aaiún, Dakhla, Bojador and Smara preceded them this Friday and announced that this is only the first stage of their fight for Haidar's return," Durhi continues.
This member of the Asvdh, however, rules out that "large demonstrations in the streets of the Sahara" will take place at this time, because they fear "that the Moroccan police forces would harshly attack us."
Even so, "if the situation is prolonged and Aminatu (Haidar) does not return," he does not rule out that the Sahrawis "decide to launch other types of actions, more forceful; especially the young people, who are tired of seeing how the conflict becomes increasingly entrenched."
Calm
For his part, Reda Taoujni, president of the Moroccan Sahara Association (ASM), denies that the "separatists" are mobilizing and assures that the situation is one of "total calm." For Taoujni, it could not be otherwise "because Morocco has already announced that it has increased all the resources to avoid dysfunctions in its internal and external security."
The president of the ASM refers to the royal speech on the occasion of the Green March, in which Mohamed VI warned that "there is no longer room for ambiguity" and made it clear that the Alaouite kingdom will battle "forcefully" against the "traitors to the homeland."
