The Security, Emergency, Rescue, Prevention and Fire Extinction Consortium of Lanzarote announces that the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has declared a pre-alert situation for wind this Tuesday from 05:00 hours, until further notice in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
Given this pre-alert situation for winds, the Consortium recommends that citizens close doors and windows to avoid air currents that could lead to breakage and falling glass. It is also recommended that pots and all objects that may fall on the street be removed from balconies and roofs; homes should be checked for cornices, balconies and facades in poor condition that could cause the fall of rubble and debris; and that you avoid going on excursions or camping until normality is restored.
It is also advisable to postpone road trips and, if you do, take extreme precautions. In this sense, the use of public transport is recommended and it is recalled that motorcycles and large vehicles (trucks, vans, vehicles with trailers or caravans) that offer a large contact surface with the wind run the risk of overturning in the face of transverse winds.
Do not walk through gardens or wooded areas
Pedestrians are advised to avoid walking through gardens or wooded areas and to stay away from walls, old houses, scaffolding, illuminated signs, billboards and other structures that may be blown down by the wind.
It is convenient to stay away from light poles and power towers as they are dangerous. In case of risk, the Consortium asks citizens to notify 1-1-2. Identical recommendation in cases of risk from construction cranes.
During the pre-alert, you should try to stay away from the coast, including beaches, promenades, pier breakwaters, etc., to avoid being hit or dragged by the action of the waves. Citizens are also asked to drive slowly and carefully in the face of the possible presence of obstacles on the road or gusts of wind that cause them to lose control of their vehicle, especially when overtaking.
Finally, the Consortium requests that you avoid calling by phone, in order to avoid collapsing the lines. If you have any questions or need information, citizens can call 012 and in case of emergency call 112 or 080.
