A cartoon published in the humor magazine El Jueves has sparked outrage in Fuerteventura, due to the caricature it makes of the island. For the moment, both the Cabildo and the Majorero Popular Party have sent press releases showing their "strongest rejection" of the magazine's "insulting content".

It is specifically on the last page where a space is dedicated to the Majorera island, with texts and cartoons signed by Modgi and Joan Ferrús. In its statement, the Cabildo criticizes them for referring to Fuerteventura as "the Caribbean of the poor", for "mocking the accent of the Majorera population, the gentilicio" and for stating that public transport "passes every 75 years". It also questions that they call "corralitos majoreros" the semicircles of stones that are on some beaches of the island "so that bathers can protect themselves from the wind while sunbathing and that for this magazine are sexual burrows".

For the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, "this is not humor but bad taste and an insult to a population and an island that has proven to be a quality tourist destination among the more than 1,700,000 visitors." "The people who live in Fuerteventura deserve respect and therefore we demand that the magazine rectify statements that they make that are not true," the Corporation maintains, in reference to the texts that accompany these humorous vignettes.

The PP wants the magazine to "rectify" these "statements"

For its part, the PP has also shown its "surprise, indignation and rejection" of this cartoon, which they refer to as an "article". "Upon seeing the content of this publication, I could not believe what was being said in it," said the island president of the Popular Party, Águeda Montelongo. "Like the vast majority of Majoreros, I can only express my astonishment and bewilderment in relation to the article that, about our island, this weekly has published, in its latest issue, in which it describes Fuerteventura and the Majoreros in an unfair and unworthy way," she said.

In her opinion, "these comments and statements contained in this article are not humor, it goes much further. We are facing a publication and an article that falls into the most crude insult, bad taste and the most absolute mockery of an entire society and citizens who cannot remain indifferent." Therefore, the PP "demands" that the publication "rectify such statements" and issue a "public apology to the entire Majorera society".

And it is that although the party affirms that it has "the most absolute respect for the right to freedom of expression, information and opinion", it considers that "one cannot fall into bad taste and insult at the expense of an entire population, of an entire island, as has happened with this article". Thus, in addition to joining the statement sent by the Cabildo, it has also announced an initiative for all the parties of the Corporation to support "an institutional declaration in rejection of this publication".
