The families of Arrecife who received social assistance for food and rent in 2020 are very concerned about the possibility of having to return said amounts. Money destined for basic needs that had an amount of 1,300 euros for food and around 2,000 euros for rent.
As La Voz has learned through the Councilor for Social Services of the Arrecife City Council, Maite Corujo, the families "did not justify" these aids in the time and manner that corresponded. Something for which the files are "active", she clarifies.
"There are about 430 aids that are unjustified," the councilor highlighted. "We have claimed from the families" and they must present the "corresponding allegations within a period of 10 days from when they have received the notification letter", she added. "They must explain why they did not justify them," Corujo highlights.
"We have put staff to work and help families with the procedures"
An unexpected situation for families that "is the first time it has happened" and in a "not very pleasant" way, adds the councilor in an interview for Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero. It has fallen "like a bucket of cold water", she acknowledged.
In addition, she revealed that from Social Welfare, "we have put staff to work and help families with the procedures". Given the situation, she explains that the Public Administration "cannot grant aid again" if there is an "open file".
"We are complying with the law," says the councilor. Although "we have to study all the files to know the reasons, given that we may have failed," she adds.
