Marital breakups increase by 2.9% in the Canary Islands, the second community with the highest rate

In the first quarter of 2025, the Canary Islands recorded a total of 1,273 lawsuits for separations, divorces or annulments, 2.9% more than in the same period of the previous year, figures that place it as the second autonomous community with the highest rate of marital breakups per inhabitant.

This is the second time since December 2019 that the Canary Islands has stopped recording the highest rate of marital dissolutions in the country. In the first quarter of 2025, that place corresponds to the Balearic Islands.

Specifically, in the Canary Islands there are 56.9 judicial breakups per 100,000 inhabitants, while the national average is 49.9, according to the statistics service of the General Council of the Judiciary.

The lowest rates of marital breakups in the analyzed period corresponded to Aragon, Castilla y León (42.7) and Madrid and Navarra (43.9). During the first quarter of 2025, the total number of lawsuits for marital dissolution in the country as a whole decreased by 3.2% compared to the same quarter of 2024.

The judicial bodies registered a total of 24,241 lawsuits of this type in that period. For their part, between January and March of this year, all types of lawsuits - both divorce and separation, consensual and non-consensual - decreased compared to the same period of 2024.

The 9,448 lawsuits for non-consensual divorce represent an interannual decrease of 3.6%, while the 13,951 lawsuits for consensual divorce represent a decrease of 2.6% compared to the same period of 2024.

In addition, lawsuits for consensual separation (254) decreased by 11.8% and lawsuits for non-consensual separation (569) decreased by 7.2% compared to the previous year. During the first quarter of the year, 19 lawsuits for annulment were filed, compared to the 18 filed in the first quarter of 2024, which represents 5.6% more.

In the analyzed period, 3,585 lawsuits for modification of agreed measures were filed, which has meant an interannual increase of 5.9%. The number of lawsuits for modification of non-consensual measures, 8,694, had a variation of 2.3%.
