Manuel Reyes Fontes, who was a Justice of the Peace of Tías for almost 30 years, received the Gold Medal of Merit for Justice of the Order of San Raimundo de Peñafort, patron saint of jurists, from the president of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC), Antonio Castro Feliciano, this Friday, July 27, in recognition of his more than four decades of service in the judiciary.
At the request of the Tías City Council, the Ministry of Justice agreed to grant such a high award, understanding that Manuel Reyes "meets the merits for this recognition for his dedication, commitment and commitment for many years with no other spirit and interest than to serve the community in which he lives".
Born in Tías 77 years ago, Manuel Reyes Fontes was a councilor of this municipality from 1966 to 1979 and presided over the Sociedad Unión Sur in the 1960s. He was also a substitute Peace Prosecutor from July 1969 until May 29, 1981, when he was appointed Justice of the Peace of Tías until March 2011, being considered the Dean Judge of the Justices of the Peace of the Canary Islands.
The event, held at the Palace of Justice of Arrecife, was also attended by, among other authorities, the mayor of Tías, José Francisco Hernández; the island director of the General State Administration, María Dolores Luzardo; the Secretary of Government of the TSJC, María Eugenia Calamita; the dean of the Courts of Arrecife, Aurora García Martínez, and the dean of the Lanzarote Bar Association, Francisco Torres Stinga.
Also present at the solemn ceremony were family members of the honoree and members of the current Corporation of Tías, as well as former mayors of the municipality such as Florencio Suárez and José Juan Cruz, under whose mandate the request was made for the award to be granted to Manuel Reyes Fontes.
