The island of Lanzarote will become during the days of October 3 and 4 in a center of debate on the economic future, and on the fitting of our archipelago in a globalized world, with the celebration, in the Auditorium of the Jameos del Agua, of the Economic Thought Forum, called on this occasion Global South Forum.
The present edition, focused on the role of the emerging economies of the south of the planet, will attract to the island former international leaders, heads of supranational organizations such as the OECD, the World Bank, the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund and the Ibero-American General Secretariat, as well as prominent businessmen, in what is consolidated as the main economic event held in the Canary Islands.
Through Global South, which has the La Caixa Foundation, Air Europa and Grambo (Vexia) as main sponsors, the Canary Islands assumes the role of meeting point between Europe, Africa and America, turning the island into a forum for discussion of the issues that mark the global economic agenda.
The role of emerging economies, which already contribute half of the world's GDP, and who aspire to a greater political weight and in global governance, will be the axis that guides this edition. Precisely, among the scheduled tables highlights the one entitled "Governance and Multiculturalism", in which will discuss the role of national governments, markets and international organizations in this new economic landscape.
Global South will also feature the presence of some of the most prestigious economists from Spain and Latin America, who in the meeting entitled "Economic Perspectives" will present their views on the future of the world economy, in a table sponsored by the financial institution Caja Rural and the hotel chain Hipotels.
Africa and tourism
The proximity of the Canary Islands to the African continent and its tourist potential make Global South the best framework for analysis of both themes. CICAR, a Lanzarote company leader in the car rental market in the Canary Islands, and the Centers of Art Culture and Tourism of Lanzarote, public entity that manages the main tourist, cultural and environmental attractions of the island, sponsor the session that, under the heading of "Tourism of the XXI century", will analyze the present and future of a sector in continuous transformation, where doubts will be resolved regarding the role of emerging destinations, innovation in mature destinations or new travel habits and tourist consumption.
For its part, the presentation entitled "The awakening of Africa" aims to shed light on the opportunities and challenges of a continent that, despite its problems, throws growth figures that invite optimism. Thanks to the sponsorship of Acciona, a leading company in infrastructure development, energy and services, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the progress and challenges of the neighboring continent.
Another of the tables that will complete this forum is entitled "Global Value Chains and Logistics", and will address the global economic environment from the expansion of emerging regions, especially Africa, Latin America and Asia.
Jameos del Agua, a unique environment
Global South has the added attraction of being held in Los Jameos del Agua, one of the most emblematic natural spaces of Lanzarote, an island declared by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. This meeting will take place in a unique environment, a natural volcanic tube, recreated as a cultural and tourist space by the Lanzarote artist César Manrique.
Global South also has the support of the Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote, the Business Confederation of Lanzarote, the tourist employers ASOLAN and AETUR, the School of Tourism of Lanzarote, the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the City Council of Arrecife.
