6 AUTONOMIC FINALISTS HAVE BEEN SELECTED IN THE CANARY ISLANDS

IES Playa Honda, finalist in the Acción Magistral Award for its "Adapted Olympics"

The award recognizes teachers who carry out projects to promote social values. In total there are 6 regional finalists in the Canary Islands, in three different categories. Does the Lanzarote Institute "compete" with a Telde project?

IES Playa Honda has managed to qualify as an autonomous finalist for the 2016 Acción Magistral Award, convened by the FAD, the Spanish National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO and BBVA. This award, which is in its twelfth edition this year, is intended to recognize teachers who carry out "relevant educational projects in the field of promoting social values in Spanish centers of Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary and Special Education".

In the case of the Lanzarote institute, the project presented was the "Adapted Olympics IES Playa Honda", which it develops together with the IES Blas Cabrera Felipe de Arrecife. This sports competition is adapted to students with intellectual and motor disabilities, "as a tool to transmit the value of effort and work, the importance of healthy lifestyle habits, the spirit of healthy competition and awareness of the rights of people with disabilities".

In this edition, a total of 438 educational projects have been presented, 17 of them from the Canary Islands. In the islands, six have been selected as finalists in the community. The other five come from Agaete, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Telde, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Arona.

During the first phase of evaluation of the Award, which selects the regional finalists, the participation in the Canary Islands of representatives of the Government of the Canary Islands, teachers from the Acción Magistral virtual community with experience in Education in Values, as well as representatives of the convening institutions.

The award has three categories, one for Primary and Infant students, another for secondary school students and a third special one for "network projects". In the case of the IES Playa Honda project, it has been selected in that third category, where it only competes with another finalist. This is the project "Two destinations under the same trip", presented by the IES Lomo de la Herradura, from Telde. The project - developed together with the IES Roques de Salmor (Frontera, Santa Cruz de Tenerife), the IES Profesor Antonio Cabrera (Telde, Las Palmas), the IES Joaquín Artiles (Agüimes, Las Palmas), the CEIP María Suárez Fiol (Telde, Las Palmas) and the CEIP Francisco Tarajano (Telde, Las Palmas) - is based on the training of students on Saharawi culture and on nutrition and the prevention of childhood and youth obesity, through different activities that work on the values of solidarity and health.

In this edition, an award will be given for each category. The winners of categories A and B will receive 4,000 euros for the teacher or teachers who are the authors of the project and 4,000 euros for the educational center where it is developed. The winning project in the special category, in which the IES Playa Honda is selected, will receive 6,000 euros for the teachers who are the authors of the project and will be granted aid of up to 4,000 euros to carry out the project again in the following school year in accordance with the requirements and conditions of the aid to network projects of Acción Magistral.
