The new Blue Flag, the highest award that recognizes the environmental quality of beaches in Europe, has been flying since this Thursday on El Reducto beach, in the capital of Lanzarote. The mayor of the city, Yonathan de León, accompanied by the Councilor for Beaches and the Environment, Davinia Déniz, proceeded this noon to raise this award that the FEEE Foundation has renewed for the main beach of Arrecife.

Also present at this symbolic act were the second deputy mayor and councilor for Parks and Gardens Roberto Herbón, and the councilor for Tourism, Commerce and Sports, Eli Merino. During the raising, the mayor invited the staff of the Beaches Area, and the lifeguards, to share this moment, considering that they are part of the essential services to make El Reducto a safe, accessible beach with quality water.

The blue flag flies again this summer in El Reducto, along with 55 other beaches in the Canary Islands. The European Federation for Environmental Education and its Spanish subsidiary, ADEAC, made public last May the list of beaches and ports in Spain to which they have granted this distinction for the summer of 2024, which includes, in the Canary Islands, four marinas.

The mayor, Yonathan de León, has remarked that El Reducto, after the transformation works premiered this past weekend, becomes the only urban beach, and in the island's capital, where the Blue Flag flies on a beach with a pedestrian promenade. The first mayor has highlighted that the new urban image of this area of the Arrecife coastline, together with the beach services, and the revitalization plans, will make it possible for El Reducto to be a new icon of the capital of Lanzarote as is already the Charco de San Ginés or the Islote de la Fermina.

For her part, the Councilor for Beaches and the Environment, Davinia Déniz, has shown her satisfaction for the renewal of this award for Arrecife. The councilor, together with the mayor, have detailed that throughout this term the beaches of the Arrecife coastline will undergo a good change with the five projects that are underway to provide new facilities and more services to other beaches in the capital of Lanzarote, including La Arena, La Concha or El Cable.

Davinia Déniz recalled that the culmination of these new projects in the beach area will allow the Arrecife City Council to present new candidacies in the coming years to opt for more blue flags on other beaches in Arrecife.

The Department of Parks and Gardens, under the direction of Roberto Herbón, has given new trees to the El Reducto area, all fed by drip irrigation. And the Councilor for Tourism, Eli Merino, has emphasized that having a Blue Flag strengthens the destination of Arrecife, where, in addition, several hotels are located in the vicinity of El Reducto beach.
