The Governing Council has approved this Monday the labor calendar for the year 2019, which includes 14 holidays, of which nine will be national, and to which the local festivities will have to be added later. As a novelty, the regional Executive has taken advantage of the fact that December 8 falls on a Sunday to replace that holiday with January 7.

The regional Executive highlights that, "in accordance with the provisions of the Statute of Autonomy of the Canary Islands and the Law of the Workers' Statute, it is the responsibility of the Government to establish the fourteen annual holidays, respecting in any case the non-replaceable national holidays", which are Christmas Day, New Year, Labor Day and October 12 as the National Day of Spain, and also the two days of rest that municipalities must establish for their own festivities.

Also, by agreement with the Holy See, the 15th of August, Assumption of the Virgin, the 1st of November, All Saints, the 8th of December, Immaculate Conception, and Good Friday are national holidays. Given that December 8, 2019 falls on a Sunday, the Community has made use of the power to replace that day of labor rest with another designated by the Community. As its own holidays, the autonomous community has designated January 7; April 18, Holy Thursday; and May 30, Canary Islands Day.

Therefore, during the year 2019, the 14 days that will be holidays will be January 1, New Year's Day; January 7; April 18, Holy Thursday; April 19, Good Friday; May 1, Labor Day; May 30, Canary Islands Day; August 15, Assumption of the Virgin; October 12, National Day of Spain; November 1, All Saints; December 6, Spanish Constitution Day; and December 25, Nativity of the Lord, as holidays for the entire Autonomous Community.

September 16 will also be a holiday in Lanzarote

In addition, in Lanzarote, September 16, the day after the festivity of Our Lady of Los Dolores, will also be a holiday. In El Hierro, September 24, the festivity of Our Lady of the Kings, will be a holiday; in Fuerteventur, September 20, the festivity of Our Lady of La Peña; in Gran Canaria, September 9, the Monday after the festivity of Our Lady of El Pino; in La Gomera, October 7, the festivity of Our Lady of Guadalupe; in La Palma, August 5, the festivity of Our Lady of Las Nieves; and in Tenerife, February 2, the festivity of the Virgin of La Candelaria.

The Government of the Canary Islands points out that the two days of local festivity remain to be defined, for which the town councils must formulate their proposals and send them to the General Directorate of Labor within a period of one month, counting from the day following the publication of this Decree.
