The Teguise City Council closed Los Charcos Beach to swimming last Friday, after Public Health detected dirt from the area's storm water pipes, as confirmed by the Councilor for Beaches, Eugenio Robayna.
"On Thursday evening there was a fairly high tide and the waves reached the upper part of the avenue. There are two storm drain manholes there and the tide carried the dirt that was in those manholes inside," explained Robayna, who pointed out that, thus, on Friday, Public Health detected "quite high" levels of dirt in the water and recommended closing the beach to swimming.
"We are not talking about sewage, but about dirt from storm drain manholes. Those manholes had mud, papers, and several things and what the high tide did was carry that garbage towards the sea," the Councilor for Beaches of Teguise wanted to clarify, who stated that Public Health will take water samples again on Monday morning and that he hopes that Los Charcos can be reopened for swimming in the next few hours.
