In number 9 of Agustín Espinosa street in Arrecife, a mobile phone antenna is being installed these days, which has angered the residents. In addition to their concern about the possible health effects of this structure, some residents question whether the company has a license to install it. For this reason, several residents in the area have filed a complaint with the Arrecife Local Police. This has led the City Council to open a file this Friday to "verify" what is being installed there and whether the company has received the relevant authorization from the Ministry of Industry.
The Technical Office of the capital's City Council has received the complaint, dated this Friday, and has decided to initiate the file to investigate it. "Now the technicians will go, verify that what is being done there is an installation for mobile telephony and they will be required to present the corresponding documentation that has to be granted through Industry," explained the Councilor for Urban Planning of the city, Samuel Martín. According to him, the City Council has not received any communication from the company indicating that they have received that license from the Ministry, although that, he points out, "does not mean that they do not have it."
The councilor explained that since May 2014 the granting of licenses in telecommunications matters depends on the Ministry of Industry. This was established by the General Telecommunications Law of that date, under which the city councils are no longer the ones who grant or deny these permits. "We are only notified of the license" by the company, says Martín. In this way, the councilor explained that next week the City Council will directly consult the Ministry if there are permits to place the antenna.
"Illegal installation"
Several residents of the San Francisco Javier neighborhood, where the antenna is being installed, have contacted La Voz de Lanzarote to express their discomfort with this work. One of these residents states that it is being carried out "illegally and without the corresponding permits" and, therefore, the neighborhood association is "trying to put pressure on the City Council."
"We only want to be heard, that our health is not played with. These antennas (articles by doctors demonstrate it) can cause cancer, migraines, insomnia, malformation in fetuses, headaches, etc., etc., etc.," claims this neighbor. "We do not want our health to be played with, enough of corruption. We want the residents of the San Francisco Javier neighborhood to listen to us. We do not want that antenna. We already proved it once and it was removed, why do they keep trying?", she asks.
In the same vein, another neighbor has addressed this media, who alludes to "all the problems that this type of structure entails" and makes a "call to the neighbors" to report the situation to the Local Police. He also points out that the building where it is being installed is a "house of assignation." The same is assured by this other neighbor, who affirms that it is an "illegal brothel." They assert that they endure "music late at night", "vomit and urine", and "shouts and fights from the clients of the house".
