Operators have already proceeded to close the entrances to the Famara water galleries, whose accesses were the subject of vandalism. In this way, the infrastructures once again "offer the security that is required of them", as reported by the Consortium in a statement.
The repair of these damages has been carried out by Canal Gestión Lanzarote, who at the request of the Consortium "offered to replace and reinforce" the locks on the doors that the Island Water Council installed at the time. On this occasion, it was decided to place another security system different from the usual padlocks so that they last over time, since "their manipulation by unauthorized persons is complicated".
These works have been carried out after a public complaint by María José Alemán Valls, a relative of Ginés Ramírez Alemán, the Lanzarote native who died seven years ago in the Piedra Cochinos gallery in Los Silos (Tenerife). The technicians of the Island Water Council went to the area to carry out an inspection at the request of the Consortium and verified that the accesses had been "manipulated by unauthorized persons, causing the breakage and disappearance of the installed security elements".
The Water Consortium has assured that it maintains its commitment to carry out an "exhaustive and continuous monitoring of these and other facilities that are within its competence in order to prevent the dangerous situation detected last week from recurring".
