The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands has reported that users and patients admitted during 2022 rate the care received in these health centers with an average of 8.64 points. This data is part of the results of the Hospital Discharge Satisfaction Survey (ESAH), which measures the quality and satisfaction of the population served in the hospitals of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS).
Thus, according to the ESAH, and with regard to hospital services, special services are the best rated by the people surveyed with an average score of 8.93. They are followed by medical services with 8.75 and surgical services with 8.73.
Pediatrics services obtain an 8.46, Gynecology-Obstetrics an 8.42, and Psychiatry services obtain an average score of 8.23.
Likewise, 97.50 and 98.7% of patients express their satisfaction with the care received from medical and nursing staff, respectively.
Relationship with staff
Regarding the relationship between patients and hospital staff, 71.7% of the people surveyed state that they know the name of their doctor, 94.6% assure that the ward staff addressed them by their name, and 97.6% indicate that the SCS professionals respected their privacy.
In relation to health evolution and medical tests, 95.6% of the people surveyed state that they were provided with clear information on these issues, 96.3% that they were informed and asked for consent before interventions or tests, and 87.9% of users had time to read, understand, and sign the informed consent.
Reception and accommodation
86.6% of the people surveyed assure that they received information about the operation of the hospital ward, schedules, and visits, and, regarding the cleanliness of the rooms, 94.5% of those surveyed rated it very positively.
Likewise, 89% of the users and patients surveyed assure that the SCS hospitals are well signposted.
Obstetrics and Gynecology
Regarding care in the delivery room, 95% of patients rate it as very positive and 91.3% state that they received information about the benefits of breastfeeding.
On the other hand, 94.6% of users assure that they received information about newborn care.
Sample profile
The sample collected to carry out this study of public hospitals in the Canary Islands was 3,204 users, of which 51% were women and 49% were men. Regarding the age of the population surveyed, the largest number of individuals is in the age group of 50 to 69 years.
Of the total patients, 51.4% had a stay of less than five days. In addition, of the surveys carried out by foreign users, 79 were in English, 19 in German, and 11 in French.
