The Hemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology Unit of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, a center attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, reaches one thousand cardiac catheterization interventions since its launch in September 2023. The thousandth intervention, performed on Friday, March 7 on a 68-year-old patient, was carried out by doctors Carlos Vasquez and Ricardo Concepción along with the Nursing team.

The team of professionals from the service has also assisted more than one hundred activations of the heart attack code and carried out other procedures such as the implantation of an automatic cardioverter-defibrillator for the primary prevention of sudden death.

On the other hand, they developed various procedures such as the diagnosis and percutaneous treatment of patients with cardiological processes, such as heart disease, vascular conditions, arrhythmias and blockages, as well as other treatments in the cardiovascular system.

These work figures of the unit after eighteen months since its opening reflect an essential healthcare activity for patients with cardiac and coronary pathology and has meant a qualitative leap in their care, given that it has allowed the vast majority to be operated on in Lanzarote without having to travel to Gran Canaria.

One thousand catheterizations

Cardiac catheterization is a complex procedure that consists of the introduction of a catheter, almost always from the groin or arm, to the heart to assess the anatomy of the heart and coronary arteries. This process allows you to see the function of the heart, measure the pressure of the cardiac chambers and know if there is any altered valve. This procedure can be diagnostic or therapeutic.

The head of the Hemodynamics service of Molina Orosa, Martín García, values the good work of the team of professionals in this area that "has allowed to maintain morbidity and mortality rates lower than expected and guarantee optimal care for patients" and emphasizes the close collaboration of the Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery service of the Doctor Negrín University Hospital of Gran Canaria, essential for the assessment and analysis of the most complex cases.

For his part, the manager of the Health Services of the Lanzarote Health Area, Pablo Eguia, assures that "reaching one thousand cardiac catheterizations in just eighteen months is a great milestone and reflects the commitment and dedication of the team".

Safety and well-being of patients

The Hemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology Unit of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that allows cardiac and coronary intervention, as well as continuous monitoring of the patient, essential for the safety and success of the procedure.

On the other hand, the unit has promoted the creation of a telemetry and cardiac monitoring space that contributes to the safety and well-being of patients. This space equipped with five beds in the hospitalization area guarantees continuous monitoring of patients undergoing treatments until they are discharged.
