Animal sacrifices at the Lanzarote Island Slaughterhouse register historical lows

The Lanzarote Island Slaughterhouse killed 8,647 animals throughout 2023. This is reflected in the data published by the island's Data Center and offered by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of the Canary Islands Government and the Lanzarote Council.

Meanwhile, in 2022 the figure exceeded 10,700 animals sacrificed and its historical maximum recorded since 2001, are 13,449 killings in 2018.

Specifically, the animals that are most sacrificed on the island to be used for food are the kids or baifos. In 2023 alone, 3,718 kids were sacrificed in Lanzarote. After that, goats follow. Nearly 2,000 goats also died in the Lanzarote Island Slaughterhouse in the last year. 

After the caprines, the most affected animals are the porcines. In total, 2,274 pigs were sacrificed in the twelve months of last year. The most common was the slaughter of old pigs and those that are raised through bait, so that they gain the most weight in the shortest possible time. While 933 piglets or piglets were also killed. 

Meanwhile, 331 lambs were sacrificed throughout the year and 264 baby lambs. Thus, 64 cattle were killed on the island, including calves, steers, bulls, cows and oxen.
