The Seprona has rescued five podencos from a farm in Tías where they were “starving to death”, while a sixth animal had already died. This has been announced by the Sara animal protection association, which has collaborated with this unit of the Civil Guard in the intervention and has taken in the dogs in its facilities.
“Veterinary reports warn of the extreme thinness of these podencos, so the rapid action of Seprona to seize them has been able to save the lives of these dogs”, they emphasize from Sara, who regrets that one of the puppies “was already deceased in the place and in an advanced state of decomposition”.
From the association they affirm that they do not want “to even imagine what these poor dogs will have suffered, because they had neither water nor food”. “We have just passed a great heat wave in Lanzarote and these poor dogs did not even have water. Why so much suffering?”, they ask, showing their “impotence” and their “pain” for what happened. Thus, in addition to “thanking Seprona Lanzarote” for its “rapid action in the case”, they have asked that Justice now act against the owner of these dogs. And they have also returned to demand that the Animal Protection Law be toughened.
Request for help from society
“From Sara we cannot believe so much abandonment and mistreatment of dogs and cats on our small island. We are still at the beginning of the year and we have already lost count of how many serious cases are reaching us. It is a real madness, we almost do not have time to denounce the avalanche of constant cases that reach us”, laments the association, which currently has “about 400 animals” in its shelter and says that it has had to do "juggling" to “be able to make room for these 5 dogs, 5 podencos that not only present great thinness, but also all have a terrible fear”.
For that reason, Sara has launched a message asking for help. On the one hand, they need adoptions to give an outlet to the animals that they currently host in the center. “We do not have more free spaces, and we fear that cases of mistreated dogs that need our help will arrive again”, they explain, warning that “if the case arrives, if there is no space”, they will not be able to help “to be able to continue rescuing and saving lives”. For those who cannot adopt, there is also the option of sponsoring dogs or cats.
On the other hand, the association also asks for volunteers to come to the shelter. “Although it seems a triviality the simple fact of coming to walk, the truth is that it is quite the opposite, it is of utmost importance, that everyone who can come to our shelter to walk our dogs and in this particular case, come to socialize these podencos full of sadness and fear. They need a lot of close and friendly human contact, they have to learn to trust people and for that we need the help of anyone who wants to come to, simply, sit for a while with our cases of more fearful dogs, so that they lose that fear and do not suffer inside the cage waiting for a new and responsible family”, they point out from the association.
