The Canarian journalist Arturo Escarda, 40 years old and correspondent for the Efe Agency in Moscow, died on Friday afternoon drowned when he tried to rescue a friend who was in trouble on the Lanzarote beach of Famara. Escarda, a native of Gran Canaria, worked for several years in media in Lanzarote, including La Voz. Four other people were rescued from the aforementioned beach by the emergency services.
According to the lifeguards who intervened in the rescue efforts, the Russian tourists bathed in the 'Codito', in the section of Famara beach next to the town of La Caleta, which has rocks and strong currents. "Right on that side there is one of the nine red flags that fly throughout the year in Famara," the emergency teams point out. The danger is accentuated by the existence in this section, the first of the beach coming from the town, of what is called a 'sucker', which drags bathers.
