Police thwart suicide attempt of a young man who threatened to detonate a butane cylinder in Gran Canaria

In order to prevent a dangerous fire from occurring, since the increase in smoke density was evident, the decision was made to evacuate the residents of the building, immediately proceeding to break down the door, both to stop the perpetrator and to safeguard his physical integrity. This task was not easy as he had placed several pieces of furniture at the door as a barricade.

Using two fire extinguishers that were in the building's stairwell, the officers managed to extinguish the flames, then quickly evacuated the individual who was inside, who was still next to the window covering his face with a shirt and showing signs of suffocation.

The 19-year-old, Sergio Fabián G. V., of Colombian origin, was treated by a doctor at the scene, who ordered his transfer to the Doctor Negrín Hospital. This person was known to both the police and health services for other similar interventions, although until now his actions had not shown such seriousness.

The residents of Parque Central Avenue demonstrated during their intervention the discontent and fear they have in the face of the young man's violent outbursts, calling him harsh insults and profanities until he was transferred.
