Police have had to intervene in the face of protests from around twenty people. Passengers will have to stop over on two islands before reaching their destination, with a twenty-hour delay.

Outrage and chaos in the Port of Arrecife due to the cancellation of a ferry bound for Tenerife

"We haven't been notified of anything. When we arrived here at 9 in the morning, they told us that the boat would arrive late, around half past one in the afternoon," explained Esther Chinea, one of those affected by this delay. "Then a very haughty man arrived, shouting that the only option we have is to take a bus from here to Playa Blanca, get on a boat there in Fuerteventura, from this island, at 7 in the afternoon, we have to take another ferry to Gran Canaria and, from there, another boat to Tenerife".

This is the route that almost twenty people from Tenerife and the mainland who had come to the island to enjoy a few days of rest will have to take. Indignation has taken its toll on everyone, as the shipping company has assured them that they will not pay for food or transportation gasoline. "They only return half the fare and we have to cover all the other boats we have to take," commented Esther Chinea.

The complaints of those affected have risen in tone and the police had to come, first thing in the morning, to deal with the prevailing chaos. "There was only one girl and we all wanted her to inform us, but in no case have we insulted her as she claims," said Javier Carrillo, another of the Tenerife residents affected by the delay. Carrillo also commented that he understands that a boat may suffer a breakdown, "but I have lost a job, since I had an interview this afternoon and, of course, I can no longer make it".

One of the operators who was managing the complaints commented, for this media outlet, that the boat has an engine problem, which would not allow it to make the crossing because it is going very slowly. "The solution we are offering passengers is to reimburse them the amount of the tickets and give them the routes from Playa Blanca to Corralero and from Morrojable to Tenerife, that is, all the routes are free and the money for the ticket will be paid".

Despite whether or not the different passages of the boats and buses have to be paid, almost everyone is outraged by how the issue has been managed and hope that the twenty-hour delay they will suffer will pass without too many inconveniences.
