Maritime Rescue has rescued until October 1,715 irregular immigrants when they were trying to reach the coasts of the Canary Islands aboard boats, reports the Ministry of Development in a statement.

During the first ten months of the year, the Maritime Rescue center in Las Palmas attended 73 emergencies and rescued 1,298 people, mainly on the coasts of Fuerteventura.

For its part, the Rescue center in Tenerife attended seven emergencies and proceeded to rescue 417 people, the Ministry added in a statement.

In the whole of the State, this body dependent on Development has rescued until October a total of 5,762 immigrants who were in a situation of risk in boats, while the number of emergencies attended amounted to 204.

In the first ten months of 2004, Maritime Rescue rescued 5,647 people in 188 emergencies.
