The Aula Magna of the University of La Laguna hosted last Friday, May 10, a three-hour scientific debate on the work of César Manrique, with which the university center closed the activities in homage to the memory of the artist from Lanzarote on the occasion of his centenary.

Under the title 'César Mantrique and his cultural legacy', the debate was moderated by the journalist and graduate in Art History, Ana Hernández, and included the participation of the director of the César Manrique Foundation, writer and exhibition curator, Fernando Gómez-Aguilera, the director of the César Manrique Chair of the ULL, professor of Art History of the ULL and professor at the University of Leuven, Francisco Galante Gómez, and the professor of Literature of the ULL, writer and exhibition curator, Nilo Palenzuela.

The debate culminated the course 'Tradition, Modernity and Utopia. Encounters around the work of César Manrique', organized by the César Manrique Chair in the context of the commemorative activities of the centenary of the artist from Lanzarote promoted by the Foundation that bears the artist's name. The academic activity, of 10 teaching hours, took place in the Central Building of the ULL, between May 6 and 8, with the aim of "disseminating the valuable cultural legacy and international impact of the artist César Manrique, as well as his message in the defense of natural, architectural and landscape heritage", as stated by the Vice-Rector for Relations with Society, Francisco Javier García Rodríguez, and the director of the course.

The course included the participation of professors Francisco Galante Gómez; the president of the Tino Walz Foundation (Switzerland) and artistic director of the Segantini Atelier Museum, Dora Lardelli; the professor of Art History at the University of Malaga, Eugenio Carmona; the director of the Eduardo Westerdahl Museum of Contemporary Art (MACEW) and vice president of Art of the Institute of Hispanic Studies of the Canary Islands (IEHC), Celestino Celso Hernández; the former general director of the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum, former director of the Esteban Vicente Museum and exhibition curator, Ana Martínez de Aguilar.
