Small and also large and heavy pieces occupy two rooms of the Casa de la Cultura Benito Pérez Armas in Yaiza, this is the artisan exhibition of Sergio Viñoly that the southern quarryman wants to share with the people of Lanzarote until Thursday, August 24 “to teach the transformation of stone into art with pure hammer and chisel”, as the artisan summarized it at the opening of the exhibition last Friday, surrounded by neighbors, family and the Councilor for Culture of Yaiza, Daniel Medina.
The exhibition can be visited from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with Sergio Viñoly himself confirming his presence in the exhibition hall during the afternoon hours. The artisan has participated twice in the Insular Craft Fair held in the town of Mancha Blanca, Tinajo, and this is the first time he has exhibited in the municipality of Yaiza.
“Quarrying is a tradition in the Canary Islands and now we not only have the opportunity to see Sergio's work at the Casa de la Cultura, but also to talk to him and learn about the entire process of creating his work from the time he cuts the stone to when he carves and polishes the last detail, it is a whole world worthy of admiration and appreciation”, notes the Councilor for Culture.
Sergio Viñoly has been carving stone since 2002, a profession that seduced him since he decided to train in a quarrying and masonry workshop school. Viñoly says that “it is hard work, but satisfying to see all the shapes that a volcanic stone can acquire and the value that people give it”. There will never be an identical work no matter how much there is a pattern.
