The public of the island will have the opportunity to delve into a scenic journey through the work and life of one of the most influential Canary Islands writers of the last century: Cecilia Domínguez Luis, to whom the Government of the Canary Islands dedicated the 2023 Writers' Day. This will be done through the scenic proposal Cecilia, world and poetry, and the subsequent colloquium with the author that will tour different spaces of the Archipelago during the coming months.

The first stop will be this Thursday, May 2 in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento of the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane, and will end on October 11 with a final performance in the capital of El Hierro.

This tribute, organized by the Culture area of the Government of the Canary Islands, includes a face-to-face talk with the author, Canary Islands Prize winner in 2015, and the staging of several of her poems, showing her creative evolution, as well as her recurring themes: the territory, identity or poetic questioning. These interpretations will be performed by Ylenia Quintero Campos and Mabel Quintero Ledesma.

Tour of the islands

After being performed last December at the Espacio La Granja in Tenerife, and passing through several islands in the following months. On September 29, at 6:00 p.m., it will be in the Sala Teatro La Tegala de Haría, in Lanzarote.

These events, with free admission, are held within the framework of the 2023 Writers' Day, which the Government of the Canary Islands dedicated last October to this author, for her brilliant literary career and undeniable influence on an entire generation of Canary Islands writers.

Cecilia Domínguez Luis (1948) felt inclined towards writing since she was a child. She is a teacher and has a degree in Hispanic Philology. She has also belonged to the editorial boards of other literary magazines such as Fetasa and ACL: literary magazine, of the Canary Islands Academy of Language. Since 2011 she has been a full academician of the Canary Islands Academy of Language and in June 2013 she was appointed member of the Institute of Canary Islands Studies. In 2015 she received the Canary Islands Prize for Literature and in 2023 the Government of the Canary Islands made her the protagonist of Writers' Day.

Literary Podcast

On the other hand, it should be noted that the first chapter of the new podcast Canarias, one more hour to read that the Government of the Canary Islands has published to disseminate island literature is dedicated precisely to Cecilia Domínguez. It is available on the Youtube channel ‘Letras Canarias’ and on the Spotify profile of Cultura GobCan.

This first program, entitled ‘Cecilia Domínguez and her lesser-known literary facet’, addresses texts such as “Bailaderos”, in which she narrates a Canary Islands scene of witchcraft. Canarias, one more hour to read has been produced by the disseminator Mónica Blanco (@cientuqui), who during eight episodes will bring Canary Islands letters closer to all kinds of audiences.
