The short film Fracaso, directed by Raquel San Nicolás and commissioned by the Veintinueve Trece Festival, has been awarded in the Personal Projects category of the Berlin Commercial 2024. This award reinforces the festival's commitment to artistic creation and visual reflection from Lanzarote to the world.
Created especially for the 2023 edition, this audiovisual piece explores in depth the theme of failure, chosen as the counter-trend around which the eighth edition of the festival revolved. Veintinueve Trece selects each year a theme that challenges the dominant contemporary trends and develops a program to question certain concepts from reflection and dialogue, through different disciplines of the visual arts.
This short film, produced by Hiersoir and the Cultural Association, premiered at the opening of the festival as a visual poem that captures the essence of Lanzarote with images shot in 35mm, accompanied by the voices of twelve participants from diverse backgrounds, reflecting on failure and its relationship to success.
As the author herself says: "in a world that revolves around the culture of success, failure is something that people don't want to talk too much about. What is not taught, but that in the background goes so attached to desire, to the goal and to success, as the shadow that sticks to one when walking". For this Canary Islands director it is somewhat ironic that a work that addresses failure ends up triumphing and winning an award "it is like closing the circle, a poetic brooch", she explains.
European award that reinforces the value of Veintinueve Trece
The jury of the Berlin Commercial 2024 praised Fracaso for its innovative cinematography and experimental narrative, highlighting it as an example of creativity in personal projects. This international festival is known for awarding originality and excellence in commercials, music videos and auteur works. Veintinueve Trece, consolidated as a benchmark in photography and visual arts in the Canary Islands, continues to demonstrate its ability to promote projects that challenge norms and raise profound reflections on contemporary issues.
Fracaso is a testament to his artistic vision and his commitment to the exploration of concepts that affect both globally and regionally. The director of the Encounter, Nico Melián, says that "this award is very good news for Lanzarote, as it shows how a unique place where culture and art are of vital importance".
