The artist from Gran Canaria, Manolo González, has been chosen by the César Manrique Sculpture Association to create the work that the group wants to erect in Arrecife in homage to the conejero artist. His proposal 'César's gaze' was chosen by "unanimity" of the people who make up the association and has been presented at a press conference held this Wednesday at the Torrelavega Society of Arrecife.

'César's gaze' is a bronze sculpture that will weigh a ton and represents the artist sitting inside an eye looking. "With this sculpture, I have proposed not so much the portrait of César, which it also has, but through the portrait, to point out, highlight and indicate what made César great, which was his way of seeing the world, his gaze. And from that perception how he acted and how he built and planned the spaces seeking the harmony of the human being in his environment", explained Manolo González

"The sculpture invites you to sit next to the statue of César and look at the world from the sensitivity and perception from which he looked at the world", added González, who was also "very good friend" of César Manrique. "I shared with him moments that were glorious for me and that I keep as a treasure for having the opportunity so young to share moments with a character who for me was so admirable."

A 100,000 euro project for which 6,000 have been raised

As explained by Roberto Fuentes, member of the César Manrique Sculpture Association, they received a total of 10 proposals, on which the group was making screenings until being left with three and finally choosing the one presented by Manolo González, who has outdoor sculptures in Gran Canaria such as El Tritón installed on the Playa de La Laja.

Fuentes recalled that the project is estimated at 100,000 euros and stated that the group has only been able to raise 6,000 so far. "But we are not going to give up", said this member of the César Manrique Sculpture Association, a group that was born with the desire to install in Arrecife a sculpture dedicated to César Manrique on the centenary of his birth. Thus, the association will continue in its objective that civil society finances the sculpture, through donations that can be made in the account number ES31 2038 7248 2760 00155685.
