The Department of Culture of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has organized the performance of the play Mararía la de Femés at the El Salinero Theater in Arrecife. In two sessions, more than 900 first and second year high school students have attended, with the aim of making young people aware of the role of women in the 1940s.
The head of the Area considers that "this type of show helps us to remember the literary works that have had a great impact on Canarian literature, such as this presentation." Toledo also highlights the "great work of Yeray Rodríguez in maintaining a degree of fidelity to the original story, while at the same time bringing a certain topicality to the plot."
The performance, inspired by Mararía by the author Rafael Arozarena, was written by Yeray Rodríguez and directed by Mario Vega. During the first theatrical session, seven schools from the Island participated, with a total of 508 students. While during the second session, another seven institutes from Lanzarote participated with the attendance of 484 students. In addition, the Minister of Education, Ascensión Toledo, and the Minister of Youth, Aroa Revelo, were also present.
Mararía la de Femés represents a marginal and silenced protagonist, who struggles to lead a life outside the conventions imposed by the society of her time. In addition, the play deals with current issues such as migration.
