The Arrecife Courts registered 186 crimes of gender violence in the first semester of the year, according to figures from the General Council of the Judiciary published in the Data Center of the Cabildo.
These data reflect a homicide during the second quarter, but both the Government Delegation and the Civil Guard have confirmed to La Voz that they have no record of any death due to gender violence on the island during that period. However, the General Council of the Judiciary has clarified that this data also includes attempted homicides, so it would be an attempted homicide that occurred last June, when a man was arrested and sent to provisional prison for stabbing his partner in Argana Alta.
The statistics of the General Council of the Judiciary also show that most of the crimes, specifically 99, took place between March and June, a quarter affected by the Covid lockdown.
In addition to the attempted homicide case, the Arrecife Courts registered in the first semester 55 crimes for injuries and mistreatment, 14 breaches of measures, 11 crimes against freedom, nine against moral integrity, seven crimes of breach of penalties, and two classified as "others". Also, seven minor crimes and misdemeanors were registered, including three for unfair vexation and two for insults.
In comparison with the first semester of 2019, there is, however, a decrease in the number of gender violence crimes of 30.3%. From January to June of last year, the Courts of Arrecife registered 267 crimes, 81 more than this year.
