The Canary Islands received 1.12 million foreign tourists in March, which meant exceeding the one million visitor mark in a month for the first time since the pandemic began and multiplying by eleven the number of arrivals in March 2021, which was 100,525.
However, these numbers are slightly below those recorded in March 2019, before this health crisis began, when the Canary Islands received 1.34 million visitors from other countries.
In the third month of this year 2022, the Canary Islands has been the most chosen destination by foreign visitors, especially British, concentrating 27.9% of travelers arriving in Spain, according to data from the survey of tourist movements at borders released this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics.
During the first quarter of the year, the archipelago has received 2.9 million international tourists, which represents a year-on-year increase of 990.9% that has led this region to concentrate 35.6% of the expenditure of travelers arriving in Spain (of 4,216 million euros), a percentage that only in March was 33.1% of the total and represented 1,680 million euros.
In annual rate, the expenditure of tourists has increased by 1,042.5% in the Canary Islands and, in addition, the islands were also the destination with the most overnight stays in March: almost 10.8 million, 837.7% more than in March 2021.
