The tourist municipalities of the Canary Islands continue to advance decisively in projects that guarantee decarbonization and sustainable development in the destinations, for which they are working on the consolidation of the Canary Green project, which is endowed with eight million euros through Next Generation funds.
The president of the Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands (AMTC), José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, explained that there is a very important commitment to continue working in this direction, since in the current context "we want to lead a change towards a more
sustainable model, where the decarbonization of our destinations is not an option, but an urgent need to preserve our environment and guarantee the well-being of visitors and residents."
The AMTC assembly was held in Puerto del Carmen, in Tías, and also analyzed the admission to processing of a legislative initiative for the definition of a tourist municipality, an "important and decisive step because we have the accommodation and tourist care weight, so it is very relevant that future lines of support for tourism projects and programs are clear about who it is aimed at, since it is not entirely clear at present," Rodríguez Fraga specified.
The tourist municipalities also addressed two very important upcoming events for the sector, such as the World Travel Market (WTM), in London, and Fitur, in Madrid, where the work carried out in the tourist municipalities will be shown, "with sustainable initiatives and a strong commitment to tourism innovation, fundamental aspects to maintain the competitiveness of our destinations," he added.
The vice president of the AMTC, Onalia Bueno, lamented the external image that has been conveyed of the islands after the latest demonstrations called in tourist areas, showing "rejection of tourists", so she assured that "the municipalities are going to work to reverse that situation", because the Canarians "are a friendly and welcoming people, very different from the image that has been given".
The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, host of the meeting, thanked the AMTC for choosing the municipality to hold this meeting and stressed that this type of working meetings are very important to unify criteria and advance in common lines of work.
