The British airport of Luton, which has 8 weekly connections with Lanzarote, has temporarily closed its doors due to the impact of a large fire in the parking lot of its terminal 2.
The fire has destroyed the parking lot of several floors, causing its collapse and forcing the suspension of all flights. Easyjet connects Luton with Lanzarote with four weekly frequencies, Ryanair has two and TUI airways another two.
In a Wednesday morning update, the airport advised not to travel to the airport and said all flights would be suspended in principle until 2:00 p.m. Passengers were also advised to contact their airline for flight information.
Images posted on social media showed flames and clouds of smoke coming from the top floor of the multi-story parking lot, along with sounds of loud explosions and car alarms.
The Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said the structure had suffered a "significant structural collapse" and that half of the parking lot had been "completely affected by the fire."
