In the next few years, the construction of some 5,700 officially protected homes will be launched in the Canary Islands. This is one of the flagship measures announced by the Minister of Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, Sebastián Franquis, within the Housing plan of the autonomous community 2020-2025.

Franquis explained in the regional Parliament that this is the most effective measure to limit the increase in rents: "The more housing there is on the market, in the public park, the more possibilities there are that the increase in rent will not rise."

The Canary Islands are also promoting other measures to combat the disproportionate rise in rental and home purchase prices in the Archipelago. Firstly, Franquis requested the support of all political groups to endorse the Housing Law project of the Government of Spain in Congress, which empowers the autonomous communities to limit rental prices in stressed areas.

"With the Canary Islands Housing Plan that we have in place and the available legal instruments, such as the measure approved by the Government of Spain to limit the increase in rent provisionally to 2% and the future Housing Law, the Autonomous Community will have sufficient valid tools to limit these disproportionate increases," he specified.

Rental aid

In addition to construction, the Housing Plan contains many more programs, also to pay aid for rental payments. As Minister Franquis recalled, the general rental aid is underway, with an allocation of 21 million euros - 18% more than in the previous call - and thanks to which, unlike the previous ones, more than 50% is being paid to the payment of the rental income to the beneficiary families.

There are also more than 1,500 young people who are receiving the Youth Rental Bonus to pay them 250 euros per month. Specific aid is also being launched for families who are in a situation of eviction or families who are in a situation of sudden vulnerability.
