The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, Pablo Rodríguez, has specified that any premises on the islands located at street level in the Canary Islands, which are closed and comply with habitability, may be used as housing.
This is included in the decree of urgent measures regarding housing to which Rodríguez has referred, who in statements to the media has indicated that the houses that are located in commercial premises will be "like a normal house" and "dignified".
"Let's not think that we are placing beds in a premises, what we are doing is transforming a premises into a home," said Rodríguez, who emphasized that for this it is necessary to comply with the technical issues that guarantees the decree of habitability.
He clarified that the Government does not propose that citizens "live in a premises, or live in a building, or live in an office", but what it intends is the transformation of those premises and those offices into decent homes.
He also stressed that this measure could place many fast homes on the market with two premises: that 50% of these houses have limited prices and with the prohibition of vacation rentals in them.
He recalled that this is not new, as it is already done in other autonomous communities and there are even municipalities, such as Santa Cruz de Tenerife, that allow it in some areas.
