The Lanzarote Business Confederation (CEL) has described the number of unemployed with which Lanzarote has closed the year as "historical figures." There have been 8,937 job seekers, which has meant a reduction of 19.7% since the beginning of 2022, according to data from the Canarian Employment Observatory (Obecan).

The president of the CEL, Francisco Martínez, celebrated this "great news" to face 2023 and the consolidation of the figures below 10,000 unemployed in Lanzarote.

Likewise, Martínez demands that public-private collaboration continue to maintain and reinforce the good data: "investments in employment plans, aid to small and medium-sized businesses or subsidies for the development of innovative business projects will continue to be the key to growing together during this year."

More than 60% are over 45 years old

Lanzarote has gone in the last 12 months from counting 11,131 unemployed to 8,937 at the close of 2022. Of these, 3,867 are men (-19.4% annual variation) and 5,070 are women (-19.9% annual variation).

Regarding their age, the unemployed under 25 are 393; those between 25 and 45 years old are 3,097; and those over 45 are 5,447 (more than 60% of the total). With respect to their training, 5,446 (60% of the total) of the unemployed only have primary education, 2,615 completed secondary school, 454 have completed university studies and 372 have some vocational training qualification.

Martínez highlighted that the people most affected by unemployment are usually women, people over 45 years of age and people without training and that "these are precisely the profiles that we try to bring into the labor market thanks to our annual Employability Plan."

The president of the CEL also highlighted the low level of unemployment in people with vocational training, "a great incentive for institutions to continue betting on the promotion of this academic path among the youngest"

By municipalities, more than half of the island's unemployed live in Arrecife, with 4,622 people. In Teguise there are 1,019 unemployed. The rest of the municipalities of Lanzarote do not exceed the figure of one thousand unemployed: San Bartolomé (993), Tías (939), Yaiza (692), Tinajo (346) and Haría (326).
