The business volume produced by tourist activity in Lanzarote during the first quarter of the year has increased by 9.3% to reach a figure of 734 million euros, of which only 26.5% (195 million) has been invoiced directly on the island, according to the Survey on Tourist Spending of the Data Center of the Cabildo of Lanzarote. This increase in income in the first three months of the year has been even greater than the average recorded in the Canary Islands, which has increased by 7.2% compared to 2016.

The average spending per tourist per day who visited the island has been 135.29 euros - 6.9% more than last year - of which 36.2 have had a direct impact on Lanzarote. In addition, according to the survey, the island "is 8.8 euros below the average total spending per tourist that occurred in the Canary Islands during the first quarter of 2017".

The Tourism Councilor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Echedey Eugenio, has described it as "good news" and has pointed out that it indicates that the objective of attracting higher quality tourism that leaves more spending at the destination is being met. For his part, the CEO of SPEL, Héctor Fernández, has pointed out that "this improvement has been contributed to by the fact that some markets with good spending behavior, such as the Nordic, Italian or Irish, have experienced increases in this first quarter, specifically, by 2.6%, 72% and 5.9%, respectively."

Most of the spending has been on food

Visitors staying in Yaiza have been the ones with the highest average daily spending per person in total, with 145 euros, but if we look at the money spent in Lanzarote, the tourists who stayed in Arrecife are the ones who spent the most, 52.22 euros, followed by those from Teguise, Tías and those from the southern municipality.

In relation to the destination of spending, of the 36.2 euros per day, the largest amount was for food (17.79), accommodation (6.37) and transport (3.8), followed by souvenirs, leisure and other concepts.

Regarding the profile of the tourist who has spent the most per day on the island, it would be of Spanish nationality, a woman - since it is slightly above with 36.34 euros compared to 36.02 for men - and with an age between 25 and 44 years old. Germans have been the foreign tourists who have spent the least on the island, with 28.49 euros per day.

The report of the Data Center of the Cabildo collects the data for Lanzarote from the Survey on Tourist Spending 2017 (First Quarter) carried out by the Canary Institute of Statistics (ISTAC). The basic objective of the Survey on Tourist Spending is to know the volume and structure of spending made by tourists who spend at least one night in any type of accommodation in the Canary Islands.
