The Minister of Territorial Policy and spokesperson for the Government, Isabel Rodríguez, has announced that the Government has authorized the elimination of limits on access to Spanish airports, so from now on travelers may go to the facilities accompanied by family or friends if they wish.
The decision adopted this Monday by the Council of Ministers will be published this Thursday in the Official State Gazette (BOE) and will enter into force the following day, Friday, October 15. This new regulation modifies Royal Decree-Law 26/2020, of July 7, which only allowed access to the airport to passengers with a valid ticket or boarding pass, in the 6 hours prior to the scheduled departure of the flight, as well as to the strictly necessary companions of minors, people with reduced mobility or other duly justified cause.
The government spokesperson, who assured that this measure is important «from the point of view of encouragement» and of recovery of normality and «affections and personal and family relationships», made this announcement at the press conference after the council of ministers held yesterday.
In this way, the Government has agreed to adapt the current regulations to the evolution of the pandemic, with the aim of contributing to the recovery of economic activity and the gradual return to normality, in particular with a view to the reactivation of tourism.
The government spokesperson indicated that from now on travelers may be accompanied by family or friends in their departure or arrival processes at Spanish aerodromes «always complying with all sanitary requirements.»
«It is an important measure to return to normality thanks to the good result of the measures we have been adopting, the vaccination process and the health situation in which our country finds itself,» explained the spokesperson.
With the lifting of restrictions, family and friends of people leaving or arriving at Spanish airports will be able to accompany them inside the terminals as before the pandemic. Their entry may be limited at times of high influx to prevent crowds from occurring.
The Government recalls that within airport facilities, the established hygienic-sanitary measures will continue to be mandatory. The Government had imposed this restriction in July 2020 to deal with the pandemic.
