The Lanzarote Business Confederation (CEL) has urged the Government of the Canary Islands to "regularize" the situation of vacation homes that exist on the island, in accordance with current regulations, or to apply sanctions in case of non-compliance. And it is that in the opinion of the business association, the Executive should not renounce "the rights that all Canarians have to finance public services with the corresponding imposition on the activities that take place in the archipelago".
For the CEL, "it makes no sense that having approved a regulation since May 22 of last year, decree 113/2015, no action is taken in accordance with it to sanction those activities that are carried out outside of this order for not registering properly or for failing to comply with it".
The Confederation recalls that the reports prepared by the Ministry of Tourism itself confirm that there are more than 28,000 homes for rent (of which around 1,800 have been regularized), with an average of 4.32 beds per home, which represents 22.34% of the total tourist beds offered in the Canary Islands and which has had a general economic impact in 2015 of 528 million euros.
With these data, for the CEL, "it demonstrates both the importance of this segment of the accommodation offer and the imperative need to act through the tourist inspection services to detect irregularities that put both the quality and safety of the visitor's stay at risk, and the corresponding contribution to the public coffers for the non-payment of tax obligations that the activity itself entails".
