The Department of Agriculture and Livestock of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has announced the call for subsidies for the feeding of rearing animals (sheep-goat) for this year. These aids amount to a total of 500,000 euros and are intended to encourage the rearing of these animals compensating for feeding costs and favoring the regularization of this livestock herd.

Oswaldo Betancort states that "given that the two most important aid programs for the primary sector, the PEPAC (EAFRD Funds) and the POSEI (EAGGF Funds) do not contemplate subsidies for the high cost of animal feed, from the Cabildo and with own funds we have established this line of aid to meet the demand of farmers who want to renew their sheep and goat herd, supporting and facilitating this sector to maintain the livestock census of the island".

It should be noted that Lanzarote's sheep and goat livestock is the most important from the point of view of the number of heads and number of farms we have on the island. In addition, livestock feed is one of the most important costs of this type of farm which, since 2020, has suffered an increase in its sale price of between 30% and 70%.

Requirements to apply for the subsidy

Specifically, the Cabildo subsidy is aimed at livestock farms on the island of Lanzarote registered in the REGA that have a sheep-goat census equal to or greater than five or more Livestock Units (LU). In addition, breeding females born on the farm in 2023, which are registered in the Individual Animal Identification Register (RIIA) at the time of application for said aid, may be eligible for a subsidy.

The amount of the subsidy will be a maximum of 150 euros per head of female sheep or goat that undergoes the rearing process.

The application forms will be available to interested parties at the offices of the Island Agricultural Service located on the Tahiche - San Bartolomé road kilometer one and at the electronic headquarters of the Cabildo of Lanzarote. Likewise, applications will be submitted to the general registry of entry of the Island Agricultural Service or the Cabildo of Lanzarote within thirty calendar days from the publication of the extract of the call in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas.
