Lanzarote has the most expensive shopping basket in the province, according to the latest Canary Islands Price Survey prepared by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics and published by the Cabildo Data Center. In addition, at the regional level, the island occupies third place, only behind La Gomera and El Hierro.

Specifically, the shopping basket in Lanzarote presented an index of 101.74 in October, six points above Gran Canaria, where it was 95.68. With respect to Fuerteventura, the difference is smaller but, with an index of 100.3, it also has a cheaper shopping basket.

The island of Tenerife has the best prices with an index of 95.15, while La Palma has an index of 96.06. La Gomera and El Hierro register the most expensive basket in the Canary Islands ahead of Lanzarote, with indices of 104.61 and 106.49 respectively.

Fresh fruit with the highest prices in the archipelago

In addition to having the most expensive basket in the entire province and being the third island in the Canary Islands with the highest prices, Lanzarote also registers the most expensive fresh fruit in the archipelago, with a difference of 15.6 points with respect to Fuerteventura and more than 19 points with respect to Tenerife, which is the island where it is cheapest.

Likewise, there are nine other categories of products in which Lanzarote registers the highest prices in the province, including delicatessen products, canned meat and fish and their preparations; dairy products, cheeses and eggs; oils and fats; fruits, legumes and vegetables (dried, frozen and canned); non-alcoholic beverages; non-durable household items; fresh meat; and fresh vegetables.

Only fish is sold in Lanzarote cheaper than in Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, also registering better prices than Tenerife and La Gomera. As for alcoholic beverages and tobacco, their price is lower on the island of volcanoes than on the island of Majorera but higher than in Gran Canaria.

The Data Center also publishes a statistic of how the shopping basket in Lanzarote has evolved from 2005 to the present, in which it can be seen that only in 2017 an index lower than 100 was registered, specifically 99.52. On the other hand, the worst data was recorded between 2006 and 2008, when the index was higher than 103.

If the figures for this 2020 are compared with those of 2019, there is also a slight increase in the price of the shopping basket, from 101.49 to 101.74.
