The quality of the waters that bathe the Canary Islands and their privileged geographical location meant that the Canaries had access to a precious essential product, salt, from time immemorial.
The first settlers already collected salt in the coastal pools, a tradition that continues and that has been awarded in the person of José Manuel Rodríguez Almenara from Graciosa, winner of the first edition of the La Graciosa Charco Salt Contest that was held within the framework of the Agrocanarias 2023 Official Sea Salt Contest in October.
The mayoress of the Teguise City Council, Olivia Duque, congratulated the winner, as well as Raúl Hernández Marín, who obtained second prize, and Eva María Maldener, who achieved third position. The awards ceremony will take place on December 26 at the Inocencia Páez Sociocultural Center in La Graciosa.
For Olivia Duque, "these types of contests are extremely important to recognize the work carried out by these true artisans of the sea, who for so many years have been dedicated to collecting salt on our island. Neighbors, in this case, from La Graciosa, who carry out a very hard and little recognized work that is part of our traditions and our culture."
"For this reason," adds the mayoress of Teguise, "I want to thank the involvement of the Government of the Canary Islands who, through the Canarian Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA) and together with the City Council, have organized this first official contest to recognize the best salt productions from our land."
