The General Director of Transport and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, María Fernández, has announced that the Government of the Canary Islands has managed to get the Ministry to increase to 120 million euros the item destined for free public transport.

"The Government has recognized us 120 million euros, compared to 81 million last year," explained Fernández. However, she also wanted to express her concern about the Council of Ministers agreement of February 28, which establishes that the financing of this item will be through a multi-year expenditure.

"Although the increase in the item destined for free transport is good news, the formula established by the Ministry continues to be insufficient to adequately satisfy the demands and real needs of public transport in the Canary Islands," said the director.

"This circumstance, which already generated treasury tensions and difficulties in the operational management of public transport, will be aggravated by the reduction of the annual amount within this new scheme of multi-year expenditure, which will further intensify this pressure and generate a problem for the island councils and transport operators, since the payments will be divided into two transfers, one of 78 million euros this year, and another of 42 million in 2026, which greatly complicates financial planning."

In this sense, the General Director of Transport and Mobility has insisted that "the Government of the Canary Islands, together with the island councils, will prepare a joint letter to send to the Ministry, with the aim of better managing this good measure and continuing to consolidate the use of public transport in the Canary Islands."
