Canary Islands led the rise in retail sales in August

The archipelago's stores increased their sales in August to twice the national average

Sales recorded by retail trade in August were 3.2% higher than a year earlier, which is a slightly more pronounced advance than that recorded by the sector in July, when they rose by 2.8%, and Canarias, with a year-on-year increase of 6.4%, led the rest of the regions in this area.

According to data released this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in the series corrected for calendar and seasonal effects, the retail trade sales index stood at 2.3% compared to a year earlier (and 0.4% compared to July).

As for employment, employment in the sector increased by 2% year-on-year in August, which adds to the 1.8% increase recorded in July.

By autonomous communities, the largest increases were recorded in the Canary Islands (6.4%), the Valencian Community (4.9%), the Basque Country (4.8%) and Cantabria (4.7%), while the mildest were those of Extremadura (0.2%) and Madrid (0.5%). In Catalonia, the year-on-year increase was 2.8%.
